ORIGIN/HABITAT: The Far East. Plants grow on forest trees on Okinawa, the Ryukyu Islands, the Japanese islands of Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu, and on numerous small islands off the southern Japanese coast and between Japan and Korea. The habitat extends west to Korea and China. Plants are usually found at 2600-8000 ft. (800-2500 m) but have been reported from as high as 9850 ft. (3000 m). In the central mountains of Taiwan, plants are found in subtropical and temperate habitats at 6000-7000 ft.
